<dc:description>Sandrart.net describes itself as a 'research platform for the history of art and culture of the 17th century'. It is a digital edition of Joachim von Sandrart’s magnum opus, the 'Teutsche Academie', published between 1675 and 1680 in a German and between 1680 and 1684 in a Latin version. Facsimiles and full texts for both publications are provided as well as a bibliography and additional texts. Browse and search functionalities allow for easy access. Particular emphasis lies on commenting the text and identifying entities such as places, works of art or persons, for which extensive dossiers are provided. These kind of information can also be downloaded as raw XML and as semantic data expressed in RDF. The project undoubtedly marks the state of the art in the critically digitizing and editing 17th century prints.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This review addresses the digital edition of Nietzsche’s works, Nietzschesource. The project presents a definite step ahead in the history of editions of the works of the 19th century philosopher and writer and offers the best text available to date. Moreover, it includes a growing archive of digital facsimiles of Nietzsche’s manuscripts and thus allows a wide base of scholars to suggest corrections and emendations of the established text. As a digital edition, however, it is in many respects disappointing, for it fails to make use of the great possibilities modern editorial techniques offer, for instance, the possibility to enrich texts with contextual material such as information on persons and places mentioned in the texts.</dc:description>

                    <dc:subject>work critical edition</dc:subject>
<dc:description>The paper reviews the Leal Conselheiro Electronic Edition, the first digital edition of the medieval text Leal Conselheiro, a moral treatise authored by king Edward I of Portugal. The goal of the research project behind the edition, a co-operation between the University of Lisbon and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is to offer a scholarly, critical, and practically useful text in digital form. The review argues that the resulting digital edition is built upon solid methodological grounds, i.a. by integrating previous editorial work and resorting to the TEI standard for encoding, but that it misses to make its achievements accessible and usable in the desired way, first of all by holding back the underlying basic data and because of a presentation that is sometimes confusing and does not tap the full potential of a digital edition.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Much effort was put into the digital edition of the Codex Sinaiticus, one of the oldest and most complete Codices of the New Testament. Whereas the material is conserved in four different places, this edition reconstructs a virtual codex, transcribing the text and offering documentary data for easy and deep access to the material. It can be described as a high quality project that aroused great public interest. At the same time, a printed facsimile edition was published allowing for a comparison of the two editions.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This paper reviews a semi-diplomatic edition of the oldest gloss commentary on Martianus Capella's De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii, a popular fifth-century encyclopaedic allegory of the seven liberal arts. Based on and including facsimiles of a ninth-century manuscript from Leiden University Library (Vossianus Latinus Folio 48), the edition was produced collaboratively by various specialists. While it succeeds in providing full access to an important textual witness to a rich commentary tradition – the complex nature of which defies any attempts at capture in a print edition – the integration of a deeper critical analysis of the textual transmission and an augmentation of the material presented is still desirable.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This is a review of the Fleischmann Diaries Online Archive, a digitisation project including a transcription of Aloys Fleischmann Jr’s diaries written in 1926 and 1927, as well as over 200 images from the Fleischmann family albums. These materials represent an important piece of Irish cultural heritage. Given the enormity of the task, which was accomplished in one year, the editor has created a beautiful piece of work. As it stands now, this project represents a digital archive with some elements of a digital edition. However, key improvements can still be made to increase this project’s usefulness as a scholarly resource, such as increased integration of the editor's related master thesis into the website, enhanced metadata of images and facsimiles, the integration of a search engine, and links with Aloys Fleischmann’s compositions, as well as recordings of referenced performances.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This is a review of the digital edition of the Becerro Galicano of San Millán de la Cogolla, one of the oldest medieval cartularies in Spain and one of the most important sources for the study of Christian Spain between the 8th and 12th century. The edition introduces new features impossible to achieve by previously printed versions, such as the possibility of reordering the documents according to different parameters or an easier manipulation of the huge number of documents thanks to a search tool capable of detecting both variants and lemmata of personal names and places. However, the use of an SQL database instead of XML/TEI encoding imposes constraints that should be removed in the future, such as the lack of expressive power towards the representation of textual structures and the lack of interoperability with other digital projects.</dc:description>

For the first time, various documents such as newspaper articles, wall newspapers, protocols of interrogation and other written sources are gathered in one edition. The review discusses the purposes and flaws of an edition created by computer linguists from the perspective of editorial studies.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This paper reviews A London Provisioner’s Chronicle, a digital edition of the manuscript chronicle inscribed by London shopkeeper Henry Machyn from 1550 to 1563. Working from high resolution scans of the fire damaged original and consulting later citations by antiquarian John Strype, the editors were able to not only produce an edition which transcoded the existing artifact into a digital medium, but also to reconstruct large sections of the damaged sections to approximate its original state. However, while the edition provides a faithful – if somewhat minimal – reading copy of Machyn’s chronicle, the edition falls far short of the potential offered by digital publication.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The Shelley-Godwin Archive aims to bring the widely scattered handwritten legacy of the Shelley-Godwin family together on one platform. To date, in October 2014, it is still in the beta phase. The first release in 2013 presented the edition of the Frankenstein Notebooks by Mary Shelley, the drafts of one of the most popular and reprinted works of British Romanticism. This initial publication is based on a previous print edition from 1996 by Charles E. Robinson, which has been adapted and incorporated into the Shelley-Godwin Archive's structure. In the future, this first release will be followed by an edition of the fair-copy manuscripts of Prometheus Unbound by Mary Shelley's husband Percy Shelley and in further project stages by digitized manuscripts of her parents Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. Aside from the digital provision of the complete literary legacy of the Shelley-Godwin family, a long-term goal of the Shelley-Godwin Archive is to create a collaborative research environment for scholars, students and the public.</dc:description>

<dc:description>The Commedia project aims to investigate the manuscript transmission of the poem, using Sanguineti's previous edition and checking the validity of his stemma with computer methods. Full transcriptions of the seven selected witnesses are provided alongside the corresponding facsimiles. The end results of the collation and phylogenetic analysis differ from Sanguineti's edition and reshape the stemma. No new critical text is provided. The edition is easy to navigate and high quality editorial materials are available. A metrical markup enriches the text and the integrated VBase tool allows the user to retrieve variants in different witnesses and parts of the poem.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Jeffrey Witt’s edition of the lectures on Peter Lombard’s Sentences by Peter Plaoul (1353–1415) uses ‘progressive publication’ to make the text public much sooner than has been previously feasible within traditional print models, bringing many long-held scholarly ideals to fulfilment. It is centred on a series of documentary transcriptions linked to manuscript facsimiles, which are combined into a single critical text. This is part of Witt’s broader initiative to create a ‘Sentences Commentary Text Archive’ that seeks to facilitate comparison of the many commentaries written on this work.</dc:description>

<dc:description>William Godwin’s diary presents a range of difficulties to both researchers and editors. Compiled over a forty-eight year period, Godwin manages to record a tremendous amount of detail in the fewest possible words. This edition – the first time the diary text has been published – takes advantage of the digital medium to give researchers new ways to synthesise Godwin’s terse and codified records into coherent forms. The edition also includes vast amounts of secondary material, particularly a wealth of biographic information. At the same time, the lack of documentation and explicitly stated editorial methodology makes classification difficult: William Godwin’s Diary is an excellent historical resource that successfully exploits the digital medium, but falls short of meeting the criteria of a Scholarly Digital Edition as a work of textual scholarship.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This review discusses Melville's Marginalia Online, a digital edition and online catalogue of the private library of author Herman Melville. The project is one of the first to make (parts of) a writer's library digitally available for research. By synthesizing and augmenting existing studies of Melville's reading, MMO provides an original scholarly resource. As such, the site offers an insight into the intellectual environment and literary influences of Herman Melville. Improvements can be made in the way this scholarship is communicated to the user. Moreover, considering the novelty of this type of research in the digital environment, it would be valuable to expand upon the technical implementations, or to publish the XML-transcriptions of Melville's marginalia.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This article reviews the online-edition of the correspondence of James McNeill Whistler, popular etcher, painter and pivotal figure in English and French artistic circles of the second half of the 19th century. The project presents a huge step forward in the history of editions of his enormous correspondence and offers transcriptions and rich commentary of over 10,000 letters. As a digital edition, however, it does not employ the great possibilities modern editorial techniques offer, especially a robust search facility and visualisation techniques that make use of the flexibility and interactive potential of the web.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This paper reviews the digital edition of Paul Klee’s Bildnerische Form- und Gestaltungslehre, the collection of his important teaching notes during his time at the Bauhaus as facsimile and transcript. A major challenge of this project is the dynamic nature of the material: the teaching material was restructured, revised and subsequently reused several times. While the transcriptions are unfortunately only available as images, which severely limits the possibilities for re-use of the research data, the edition nevertheless provides a vital source for art-historical research on an artist who influenced a generation of successors.</dc:description>

<dc:description>This review discusses the Digital Scholarly Edition Welscher Gast digital that is conducted as part of the German Research Foundation special research programme Materiale Textkulturen. The edition project aims at analysing the production and transmission of the medieval didactic poem Der Welsche Gast (‘The Romance Stranger’; c. 1215/16). The centre of the edition is an easily accessible and easily readable base text. It is conceived as the starting point into different branches of research that tightly combine philological and art historical studies. The edition, which is in the middle stage of its genesis, builds on a sound theoretical model of its source materials and impresses with innovative and interesting display of data and research findings.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Hugo von Montfort – The poetic work calls itself a hybrid edition. In fact one would hesitate to call this a digital edition as from the beginning, the main purpose of the website had been to accompany the printed edition. Nevertheless, over time more materials have been assembled and offer multiple ways of access: for textual scholarly work (Lesefassung), for linguistic and palaeographic interests (Augenfassung), for listening. Unfortunately the texts are distributed over several websites and cannot be linked as one would wish. Additionally, the Augenfassung is available only for the main manuscript. Restrictive licensing will not allow to make use of the material other than reading on-line. This is regrettable as the original edition has been award-winning.</dc:description>

<dc:description>For the first time, La Entretenida offers a digital scholarly edition of a theatrical text written by Miguel de Cervantes. From a scholarly perspective, the edition has a considerable value offering a brief contextualization of the play, a clear set of editorial criteria, and an edited text that provides different views, including an English translation. From the digital perspective, it represents a solid model that could be exportable to other similar works; nonetheless, some improvements could be performed, such as making the underlying encoded textual data available and adding technical documentation.</dc:description>

<dc:description>Digital Thoreau is a web resource comprising three digital projects related to the work of Henry David Thoreau created at SUNY Geneseo. The first of these is a fluid text edition of Thoreau’s most famous work Walden. This allows multiple versions of the text to be represented simultaneously in a dynamic environment, which can be a valuable resource to Thoreau scholars, particularly for those interested in researching the genetic aspect of the text. In the second project a very innovative and engaging social reading platform has been created in order to facilitate community and student driven annotation of both Walden and his 1849 essay Resistance to Civil Government. The third project is a student created digital archive of the papers of Thoreau scholar Walter Harding, which is primarily a pedagogical exercise in digital humanities for the students of SUNY Geneseo. Digital Thoreau as a whole is a multi-faceted web resource that offers interesting new opportunities for scholarly research as well as for teaching and public engagement with Thoreau’s influential works.</dc:description>
